When I was in high school there were jocks, preps, goths, skaters, druggies/stoners, etc. But I've never heard of "emo" until I started looking at Yahoo Answers. I'm out of the loop and curious about what this is.

hm... ok, so is it sort of like "new goth"? or is it more like "alternative artsy fartsy"?

Emo Kid
One who rejects "pop culture" and joins the counter-culture realm. Usually has ideas contrary to popular opinion and seeks to gain a better understanding of life through artistic venues. May appear depressed, have black or red hair, and dress in a way that is contrary to what is popular. Thrift stores, art, coffee shops, underground music, and poetry are usually of great interest. Contrary to popular opinion, though an emo kid may seem depressed, within their own group there is an element of deep understanding and friendship. Emo kids see the world as beautiful, but its inhabitants as lost and depressing.

Emo is often used in reference to "emotional" music, which is usually dark or depressed sounding. The Cure (back in the day) would have probably been considered an emo band.

emo means emotional....the boys usually wear tight girl pants stud belts and they also listen to depressing music..by best friend is emo

its an emotional person.They Slit Their Wrists cuz of depression and are often depressed and often have thoughts of killing themselves cuz they think everyone hates them and they arent 'goths' cuz goths dress in all black and are they are totally different

It's one of those labels it means emotional....
