My a/c sometimes blows hot air for no reason. I have fixed it in the past by switching the circuit breaker on and off until it begins to blow cold again. I'm having the same problem, but my normal routine isn't working. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

It sounds like your compressor is shutting down, possibly from a pressure switch. You need to investigate why the unit is overheating(if that is the case) A likely suspect is a deteriorated or plugged condensing coil on the outside unit. There is also a possibility of the older compressor needing a boost to get started, and a hard-start kit might do the job.

A good service tech should be able to isolate the problem in short order. Good luck!

Hmmm, I would guess that it needs one of three things.

#1 - A motor contactor

#2 - new capacitor

#3 - might need to add a hard start kit because of low service voltage. Get you electricity checked when the tech comes over.

Is the fan running on the outside unit ?

Are the coils on the outside unit plugged up with grass or dirt?

When you get it to run, does it cool properly?

You need to spend the $100 to get a tech to come and look your system over.

You do get a maintenance check every six months, don't you ?

You surely get your duct work check and cleaned if needed, once a year, right?

You do change your filters once a month all year long, yes?

You do have a UV light kit in your duct work to get rid of all those nasty germs, like everyone else?

You never smoke in the house to get that into the "A" coil and plug up the works, I know you don't.

You would never use "Uncle Billy Bob's Heating and Lawn care Service" from around the corner driving that 1977 Dodge van, would you ?

That is why I can charge $100 per hour and stay booked up. I want to be the last one to show up at your home when the other guys couldn't get it fixed.

the compressor in the unit is probably over heating and tripping the breaker. the reason your feeling hot air is because the blower motor/fan is still running circulating the indoor warm air. Make sure the filter and outside unit are all clean and not blocked. If this doesn't help call a service guy or woman!

It needs to be serviced...the same thing happened with my car a/c (okay, not the same, but still, the compressor would cut off and stay off, and it ended up needing a new compressor).

It could need more refrigerant or could need a new compressor. Just call a professional after checking reputations and prices. You do not want a high electric bill b/c it is running and running all the time without cooling.

Also, check your filters (though that would not cause such a problem but would improve efficiency to have clean ones).

You definitely need a Tech to look at it. When a system gets to the point you are describing, its usually not a good outcome. An A/C compressor is an extremely hard working machine and even the slightest malfunction can cause it harm. Thats why regular maintenance is so important. Good luck.

If it is thundering or the power is surging, the unit can freeze up. Turning it on to auto on, a/c off for 3-4 hours can unfreeze it. You literally see ice on the unit in the attic and sometimes the outside line. If it has a coolant leak it will make this happen more often.

Try leaving it off for about 15 minutes and then turn it back on

Its probably low on refrigerant charge, call a service technician.
