How would you feel if the government desided that at the age of 18 that no matter what sex, you had to do 2 years of service in the military?

My opinion is this....that it would be a great idea because three reasons; 1. It would eliminate the decline in military personel. 2. It would give the youth of America disipline. 3. It would not KILL the youth of America to postpone going to college for two years to provide America with the service of protecting OUR country.

Everybody complains or is complaining that there is nothing they can do for our country, but if this situation was to actualy take place, it would stop everybody's crying about what to do because everybody would be doing their part for our country.

SO! How would you feel if this happened and tell me why?

Your intentions are good but this is not a perfect world. Like it was in the '60's Canada would suddenly find themselves with an over populations of draft dodgers. Mostly the left wing liberals who always seem to talk the talk but never walk the walk. They want the advantages of freedom but somehow never can justify fighting for it. They will only continue to cry north of the border. I'm a vet and know of what I speak. Left wingers are communists as far as I'm concerned and I don't want them in my military.

I've read your question, and I've read all the previous answers (at least those posted when I started this response) Here's my thoughts =

What you're talking about is known as the "draft", someting that isn't new. Up until the end of the Viet Nam war all U.S. male citizens between the age of 18 and 35 were subject to be drafted into the Army, Navy, or Marines. The USAF did not use the draft as far as I know, and most of the "draftees" were single and under the age of 25. One of the main reasons the draft was discontinued was because it was not a fair and equal system for maintaining an adaquate number of armed forces. The wealthy were able to avoid the draft by attending a college. Sons, nephews, cousins, and friends of influencial politicians were able to use that influence to avoid the draft. That meant that the overwhelming majority of draftees were from middle class and poverty class social groups. What Congress decided to do was to make serving in the military more attractive to these groups and get then to enlist rather than be drafted. They did this by doubling the pay for privates, and offering incentative bonuses for combat related skills (armor& infantry) and and re-enlistments. The only thing that changed was the wealthy wasn't subjected to the draft, and they didn't have to run to Canada to hide like an outlaw.

As long as the US stands on the side of freedom and justice "for all" the draft will never be needed. As long as the American public, and more specifically the peers of those serving, respect the ones who are serving, the draft won't be needed. Soldiers can not be held responsible for foreign policy and the decision to go to war. They are duty bound to honor their oath to serve, regardless if they agree or disagree with the decision.

1. It would eliminate the decline in military personnel...temporarily. You would have a lot of young soldiers that couldn't care less about being in the military. There would be very poor morale (you can force someone to do something, but you can't force them to like it).
There would be a shortage of highly trained senior personnel (since no one wants to be in the military, they would all leave after two years, and you would not have any one with over 2 years experience).
2. It would give the youth of America disclipline, but it would also make them resent the goverment for forcing them into service.
This could backfire, around election year! I doubt that the millions of soldiers in forced servitude would want to elect someone who would continue the draft.
3. It would not be too much to ask to have citizens postpone college for two years to be in the military, but it is too much to force people to do it. Military service should be a choice. I think that unless the country is in grave danger (WW1, WW2, etc) the military should be volunteer. After all, if you were in combat, which would you rather have covering you - the person who was drafted or the person who volunteered?

Hope this helps, thanks for spending the time to read my opinion.

Great,Maybe todays youth would get the discipline they sorely need,&travel the world & see how it actually is over there.I've been there & know of the opression some of these countries put their people through.I spent 14 years in the military,Marines,Army'and the Navy.I got to see most of the world that I wouldn't otherwise have been able to see.So I think it would be a good thing.Plus while in the military you can still go to collage. The last I knew the service matchs you Ithink if I remember correctly $2 to your $1.And futhering your education is encouraged.

BOOBERT do not mess with things that you do not know what you are talking about

It would cost too much and veterans and service members would lose the benefits that they get for serving-most of the time people who need these benefits only join the military to escape the generational poverty that has held their families down for years

The only reason why people with money or the means to go to college join is for their political careers

Not everyone is cut out for military service-that is why our military is the best of the best

If that happened, 18-20 year olds wouldnt exist in our community, meaning a BIG gap in jobs and so on.

18-20 year olds currently fill a major place in the part-time staff and it is also two crucial academic years. If we were forced into the military then we would surely lose out in the long run. You say it prospones college but can it be afforded? Think what age you would be when you finally got into your job, would you have time to work up the ranks so that you can settledown to a family?

It is that way in several countries right now.
And it works great. In those countries crime is low, there is very little disrespect for others ans patriotism is very high.
I may not be popular for this but I believe it would be an excellent policy.

BTW. If there were a draft I would feel much better know at least my son had 2 years of training instead of 6 weeks and thrown out into combat.

It's a good idea in principle but a few months would do. Some European countries (Switzerland, Germany) have compulsory service for everyone. More or less it's basic training. You can't have every kid in the US in the military for two years. We'd be supporting way too many troops, but we could have everyone go through several weeks of basic military training.

The military doesn't need that many people in it. It would cost way too much money. Not to mention it would destroy our country as this is a government by the people for the people. Forcing people into the Armed Forces when the country is not in mortal danger is an anti-American concept and forcing an issue such as this would cause a revolution.

As long as the government provided equivalent national service opportunities for those of us opposed to serving in the military, I'm all for it. I'd like to plant forests and help build up the communities at home rather than train to kill people.
