Symantec is a piece of junk! Do your self a favor, stop paying for anti-virus software and go get a perfectly good free version that will find and remove viruses!

I recommend AVG Anti-Virus - it's free for home users and can be found here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_anti_virus.html

Run AVG in Safe Mode and do a virus scan - learn how to run in Safe Mode here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/how_to_start_in_safe_mode.html

Good Luck!

How do you know that you have a virus? If Symantec turns off when you run it, what indication do you have that you have an infestation? Are you getting a warning like this:

Symantec has found a virus in

C:\computer\documents and settings\default user\temporary internet files\contentIE5\a.exe?

It won't say that exactly, just someting similar. If so, have you gone to that file to try to find it? If you have, or do, look up the name of the file that is causing the infestation by googling it, or by doing a search on Symantec's site. This should give you not only some indicator of the virus/worm/infestation with which you're dealing, but also some pretty accurate removal instructions.

Remember that not every virus is going to be found by your A/V, especially some of the newer IRC worms out there.

Do yourself a big favor... buy a MAC.
