To be honest, big cities are terrible places to watch the night sky, because there's too much light pollution. All the lights flood into the sky, giving it a usually orange, barf glow, and ruins the beauty and majestic stars of the sky at night.
Your best bet is to go to an area that's far away from the city (I think 15 miles is usually good, but make sure there's not much light in the area). And bring a jacket, cause it may get a little chilly at night, even in the summer. And be careful cause there might be wild animals out there, or criminals looking for an easy victim.
I have to say, there's not much else on Earth as beautiful as the night sky on a clear, moonless night. It's too bad that nowadays we have too much technology getting in the way of it.

Do a search on line for local amateur astronomy clubs - I'm sure there are several in the nyc area. I believe the website for the magazine Sky & Telescope has a list of amateur astronomy clubs. Also, call up your local planetarium (again, a web search will find them) and ask them, they generally know which clubs are active. Have fun!
