I think mine might be broken - it won't play games - but this computer is only two years old - shouldn't it last longer? I don't know how to fix it - and I don't really want to buy a new drive - but if I have to - I will - I have a Dell

According to PC World 50,000 to 75,000 hours of use. Is your computer still under warranty? If so, you can have Dell provided you with an authorized dealer in your area and have them fix it. BTW, a DVD/ CD combo drive will cost you $25 USD (plus any shipping costs) at Newegg.com. A combo drive can even burn CD's.

a Dell computer never mind the cd rom drive last you need to ask how long that Dell computer will last
ok if you use games on a day 2 day run the cd-rom will last about 3 years but if you copy cd2 cd then it will be less as for the cd games dont work in the cd-rom now try a music cd if that dont play then you need to buy a new cd-rom

Just because you cant play games doesnt mean the drive is broken, can you play music CDs, or read data cds? If not, then yeah, it's probably fried.

If you're still under warranty, send it back to dell so they can replace the drive, but it definitely should last for years longer than that.

New drives that only read are dang cheap and fast...the only drives that will break $50 are the best of the best dvd burners. You can get a dang fast and decent drive for around $20. Or, you can buy a disc cleaner for $10, and have a mediocre, used drive. Your choice.

It depends on how much you use it, and how long has it been since you cleaned the laser with a cleaning disc. It may just need cleaned good, try that before buying another, it could save some moolah..... Good luck
