Smurfs are male. Gargamolie created a clay female smurf to get the male smurfs to come to his castle so he could drain their blue essence. She was evil but though her actions papa smurf made her a real smurf by his own magic.
There are females too. Smurfette, sasette and clockwork smurfette who is a wooden robot. There's nanny smurf/granny smurf.
There is no Mama Smurf as they were made by magic.

Well too answer you re question. If you watched the 1980s cartoon it tell you the stork brings them too the village, and thats why wild smurf was lost. Because the stork s bag tore, and for smurfette she was made by gargamel, and the smurflings got younger by a clock by father time, and they wanted make other girl smurf because smurfette was sad she was only girl. They went to brainy Smurf too see how it was done, and found out it was gargamel that did it. So they rip a page in his book that help make smurfette. So they made nother girl smurf called sassette for her. There was a nanny Smurf, and grampa smurf too thouth. They came on the show later on in the 1980s.So too answer you re question. All but smurfette, and sassette the two girls on show. Was got there by the stork.

as I remember it, in the beginning, all the smurfs were boys, they were brought by a stork???(maybe)..this I know..on the night of a blue moon (see episode where they get baby smurf), a baby smurf comes along "once in a blue moon". Pappa smurf made smurfette by magic I think, maybe she was a trap made by gargamel that pappa smurf turned good or something....can't quite remember.....it has been many years since I saw the show.

I love the little blue guys ..... The Smurfs (1981) Smart cute little good guys, who live in Smurf Village made of mushrooms somewhere in the woods. Honestly, Smufs movie. I think this little blue guys should remain our old time favorite animated tv series.

How about poor smurfette? Do you think she was the mother of baby smurf, or was she just added so people didn't think the smurfs were not just happy but gay? Maybe the smurfs are so annoying to female smurfs that they have to leave or go crazy? Maybe the females live in one commune and the males live in another. Maybe Gargamel ate them.

It is my belief, and only based on assuption and hearsay and has no pertinent relavance to anything relatively important in the real world, but I think she was tragically eaten by Azriel, the soul evil cat of Gargomel. Or the loosely based theory that smurfs were asexual and produced offspring like the tapeworms, simple one cell separation reproduction.

I don't know, but I find it weird that Smurfette seems to be the only girl smurf.
