You cannot fire someone for their race, religion, national origin...

I'm pretty sure you can't make up a way that firing for having a bible wasn't religious.

You can fire someone for what they wear and any objects not related to work that you want so long as it is in the company policy manual and could not be limited to Christian paraphernalia, it must be against spiritual items in general or even just personal items not issued by the company (many do this to keep photos, paperweights, etc. from cluttering office space). This does not equal firing based on religion, just having religious accessories. You can't fire someone for being a Christian or a Buddhist or whatever. But if company policy states that no religious paraphernalia is to be visible, that means no bibles or other holy books, crosses, mini Buddhas, goddess idols, ichthys, stars of David, pentagrams, etc. It just has to be in company policy and equally enforced. Some feel a place of business in not a place for worship or proselytizing, rather a place to work and earn one's pay.

Those that have authority over others can and do abuse that authority. It sounds like that's what your doing by fireing people over these things. Your attitude is a poor example of supervision. And just think you might be in the other persons shoes someday, would you like being fired for wearing purple or having a bible on your desk?

why, why why would you fire someone for wearing purple, isn't that freedom of expression, and why fire someone for having the Bible at their desk, unless it is written inthe rules, or guide book somewhere i don't think you can.
unless you are just a discriminating pig

An employer can fire anyone for anything as long as there is not a precedence set for tolerating the action previously and it is clearly stated that the action is against company policy. Otherwise you will likely face a lawsuit.

It is illegal in ALL circumstances to fire someone because they have a bible on thier desk. That would be religious discrimination.

Hmm interestingly enough (sad but true..) if any item, article, relic or ceremonial activity is performed or present by anyone who is NOT Christian, it's not ok to reprimand or fire them.

It's great when you have customers waiting and your salesman is behind the counter praying to Allah on his knees during business hours....
