Yes.
As humans we all want to be heard, even if we're having a crappy day.
I look at it as you can either stop for 5 min and listen sympathetically or you can watch the 5 o'clock news and see that same person who you couldn't bother listen to being arrested for losing their mind and go postal on someone.
You don't have to agree with them, just let them air out.

Nope. Usually when people want "share" a problem, what they really want is for someone to solve the problem for them. Very often, people who empathize, wind up stuck with that task while the person who had the problem gets off scot free. People need to learn to solve their own problems.

Depends on the person. If they are trying to improve their live then I would be empathitic to their problems and give them a lending ear to help listen to their woes. But if they aren't doing anything and don't want anything to improve their lives to get out of their problems and if they don't have good friends that are prepared to help them to get out of their problems and just sit there and see the person go down hill then I will not bother with them. I knew a woman that complain how she was treated as a child by her parents and how it effect her to this day. If I made a suggestion on how to improve to help her, I would be told to back off and leave her allow in a rude way by her friends while these friends just sit there and let her complain, not seeing the pain she was in.

Answers...if someone comes to me, like a friend, of course i will listen and try to give them advice to the best of my ability...

Yes. I think sometimes I over-empathize. I'm like Dolly Parton's character in Steel Magnolias 'Nobody cries alone in my presence.'

Only if I've experienced the same problem. That's what empathy means.

Sometimes I do as long as they're being sincere about it and not just trying to get sympathy.
