My first job? I asked my Highschool Chemistry teacher if he needed a lab assistant (aka: cleaner-upper)... and I got it.

first "outside" job...
The prep: Figured out what the lowest hourly wage I would accept would be... drew some lines on places I would *not* work (ie: no commission, no food jobs)... and figured out how far I would be willing to travel as well as how many hours of work.

The Action: Made a whole stack of resumes with cover letters and went to the mall.

First Full-Time "real" job:
The Prep: same as with the first job

The Action: Hit Monster/Workopolis and told everyone and anyone I knew that I was looking for a job and what kind of job I was looking for.

Start going to stores you would be intersted in working and ask for an application. Be persistant. If the store doesn't call you, keep calling them and bug them about that job untill they tell you the postion has been filled. That's what I did and I have been working at Ingles for almost three years and Im well respected there.

I pestered the crap out of the manager after turning in my app. I followed up with several calls, stopped in and talked to him, He finally hired me so I would leave him alone. And I did the best I could do for the company so they promoted me several times, in less than a year.
