I wish you could have specified girl or boy. But, with not knowing i will answer as a unisex present....well, school is started, get them something that is cooler than any other kid has. This could be clothes, accessories or a game/sport thing. Anything they can show their friends that is "cooler" than thou. This age is so competitive.

Your local bookstore should have a display of books by the Klutz company. They are how-to books that come with supplies. Some examples that are popular with that age girls: nail designs, decorate your own lights, make your own mini-book, friendship bracelets, mini-fairy kits. If you check out the display I'm sure you'll find something.

My daughter is 12 and she loves nail polish, and hair stuff... and magizines and books clothes... last year for christmas she wanted the bratz head that she could style they hair! that was cool I taught her how to french braid and do a french twist. now all her friends want her to fix their hair... good luck.. I am sure she will like what ever you get. You could put together a gift bag... like maybe find a teeshirt.. then grab some nail polish and hairbows to match... awesome gift for a girl!

Clothes. Something in style. Make it even more special by buying a purse, shoes, and a belt that match. My daughter also likes the kits that allow her to design her own jewlery.
