I have studied hypnotism with a professional therapist and it's important, first, to sweep some misconceptions out of the way.

Hypnosis is not some kind of magic hocus pocus that makes people jump up and down and bark like dogs. There are a lot of misconceptions out there.

Therapeutic hypnosis is simply a relaxed state of mind wherein the mind is more open to helpful suggestions. It's almost like meditation in that it helps focus the mind and center you.

The basic technique to hypnotize yourself is to record a tape of yourself speaking into the mic. You begin by telling yourself to lie back and get comfortable and look at a point on the ceiling (the therapist I studied with had a couch with a red pushpin in the ceiling above it).

Then you go into a repetitious description of how heavy the eyelids feel, and how they want to fall and how they are now closed and sealed and asleep until later.

Then you go through every part of your body and narrate how it is getting sleepy, feeling loose and rubbery and lazy. Go piece by piece, from one toe to the next, all the way through all the muscles and joints, up to the head, the neck, the jaw, the tongue, the eyes. You want to relax everything.

Then you suggest to yourself positive affirmations which you earnestly want to adopt in your life. Things like

"You are very patient with your girlfriend"

or

"You exercise every day and like the way it feels"

or

"You never smoke cigarettes and love feeling healthy"

This technique is described in a book called Self Hypnosis and Other Mind Expanding Techniques, by Charles Tebbets. There are scripts you can follow, and a lot of good background info on how to make hypnosis helpful and keep it real.

If you are looking for a way to perform magic tricks to entertain your friends, you are out of luck.

However, I can say that I have used hypnosis to memorize large amounts of information (like verbs before a French test). I have also used it to ease pain, create relaxation, reduce addictions in others, explore feelings, etc.

In harmony with the above or so answer, get bored stiff spectating your own life. If that's not repetitive enough, come and visit my mother. Do what the majority of working class people do, the same thing over and over and over...become a mail sorter or get religion. No offense to the Muslims here, become a Muslim.....become a jew, ...become a Holy roller, a Pentacostal or a JW....etc etc etc Listen to the water drip ....heaven.

you can't do that if the activity implies a conflicting "sending and receiving" orders to perform.
But, you can reach alpha state, by relaxation and meditation technics.
In that state, you can programm, consciously, yourself. But programming yourself is NOT hypnotizing yourself.

I dont think it is possible to hypnotize yourself I think someone else has to do it for you.
