Have you checked for poisonous plants?

I wish I knew the answer. I try to think the best but we had a nice heifer one year and she was great. All of the sudden she started losing weight, got really weak and was found dead in the morning. We scoured the property for plants or anything else that could have caused this and didn't find anything. We suspect the teenagers who lived next to the feild fed her a poison because none of the other cows had any of the symptoms. If it wasn't them, she may have drank some contaminated water from the creek although it was clean when we checked. It could have been a small spill and she just happened to be there.

Let's see...during the 2 weeks the cow was losing weight "like crazy" you didn't think to call the vet. Anyone know the number to Animal Cops?

She may have had "Hardware". This is what it is called when a cow ingests a piece of metal. It causes them to lose massive amounts of weight then they die. I don't know that there is anything you can do for her, but be sure your pasture is clear of old metal. Every time you see something metal in the pasture, remove it. There are lots of diseases out there that cattle can get. Call your vet and tell him or her what happened. They may want to post (do a necropsy) her to make sure it is not anything contagious.

Sounds like you need to seek the help from a local vet or Ag Extension service.
