My garage door broke yesterday. One of the wheels fell off and the metal it was bolted onto is broken. The opener has a track with a chain and it is in bad condition, as well. I think it would be better to replace both than pay to have them repaired - not sure. Advice welcome. Can you recommend a brand and style for the door and the opener? Do you think Lowe's is a good place for purchase and installation (I can get 12 months same as cash there). Thanks!

Greetings....

My best bet for one is from Sears... They will at least have parts for it down the line... You never know what Home Depot or Lowes will have next week.... and forget about parts a year from now.
I do a lot of maintenance and strongly suggest you stay away from the plastic tape drive type..(need I say more)

I personally prefer the chain drive over the screw; mainly because the 8 foot screw is very well oiled and attracts great amounts of lint, dust and just about any thing that goes by it. This is then collected onto the drive nut that travels the 8 feet of screw - each time. When ever I have a failed scew-type door (it is usually this nut getting dried out and locking up).

The chain drive is also well oiled but it does not have the drive nut to collect, clog and choke up with what ever rides the chain. It just goes around and around on sprockets like a bicycle chain ....sort of.

All jobs fixes have their particular ups and downs.....
Hope yours goes well....

Rather than name a brand, here a few things to consider.
-does the home improvement store near you stock replacement parts and additional openers if you lose one?
-the screw drive ones are better (as opposed to chain drive)
-Lowes is great, just be sure to pick one that they regulary stock. You don't want some brand that will be out of business in 5 years when you start needing parts or have questions.
-Genie is nice just because you can always pick up new openers in any hardware store.
Good luck
