Absolutely. There are no studies that show hair dye harms the fetus. It is a myth!!! I talked to my doctor as I am a "unnatural blonde" :) He told me to stay away from any chemicals as a general rule during the 1st Trimester- primary development stage that included paint fumes, etc. He told me if I still had concerns (although there was no real reason for them) to use foil or have it pulled through a cap so that the chemicals never actually touch your scalp.

Believe me, I've been going to the same salon for years and all the hairdressers who were around the chemicals way more than me throughout their entire pregnancy have produced a total of 7 beautiful, HEALTHY babies through my years there.

I got my hair done 3 times pregnant & my little girl couldn't be more smart & perfect:)
For some strange reason, when a woman is pregnant, it seems everyone has the right to tell you what you may & may not do whether it's harmful or not and the answer always seems to be "no, it will harm the baby" but where is their concrete proof???? I had total strangers telling me not to eat cold cuts because it may harm the baby...what's in store for pregnant women of the future? Are they to be kept inside all day & not be allowed to shower (as they may slip & fall & harm the baby) or drive (as they may have an accident & harm the baby)? Sorry for the soapbox but pregnant women have the right to live their lives normally without constant anxiety just like any other person.

i totally agree with queen, my dr had NO problem with it and i had my hair colored and highlighted every six weeks my entire pregnancy. how do the women talking about the fumes explain how hairdressers that are pregnant can work in a salon 40 plus hours every week and have perfect babies. i think it is a myth, do you really think the chemicals will seep in to your scalp enter your blood stream and then be able to cross the placenta. the placenta is selective about what it lets through. you will be fine and when you are big and pregnant at least your hair will look nice. plus think of all the other things you inhale: fumes at the gas station, second hand smoke, smog hair chemicals are the least of our worries

Yes you can but you should wait until your second trimester.
Remember that hair is dead so it can't hurt your baby. There is a small risk if some of the chemicals touch your scalp and are absorbed by it, but again it is very small.
The smell will bother you more than anything.
I had the same question so I looked it up on WebMD.

It's not dyes in general but dyes containing ammonia, which most permanent hair dyes do, that are harmful to fetuses. But this is also not conclusive.

If you REALLY want to dye your hair in your first trimester (the most sensitive time for a fetus), I would use natural vegetable dyes such as Herbatint or Vegetal. Or KoolAid. I'm serious, it works if you have light hair. It lasts for a few days though.

But really, when it comes to the safety of your unborn child, it's a small price to pay to have dull hair for a few months.

Generally it's best not to dye your hair while you're pregnant. The chemicals could soak through your scalp and down to the developing fetus. When the baby is born, it might appear perfectly healthy, but outward appearances are not everything. Highlighting your hair is okay though.

I'm 39 weeks and I have had my hair dyed plenty of times. As long as you are not breathing it in directly and it's not long term, you will be ok. Make sure you are in an area that can get air easy. Open windows while doing it.

I did, you cant dye your hair later because your hormones are so out of whack that if you do the color wont be the color its supposed to be...ask you stylist what kind of dye you should use.

Yes you can. I dye my hair every 2 months & my dr. says it's just fine. Make sure the room is ventilated, though.
