Anything by James Herriot. He's a veterinarian who wrote a lot of books about his experiences. They are very funny and hard to put down!

Timbuktu by Paul Auster. What is interesting about the novel is that it is narrated from the dog's perspective.

Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov. A professor plants human organs into a dog, which slowly starts to become human.

Have you read James Herriots Dog Stories. They are all non fiction short stories. He's a really good author for animal lovers.
