I'm starting my freshman year at a state college and just found out that one of my roommates is a Resident Advisor. Is this a good or bad thing? What should I expect.

If I were you, I would ask to switch roommates. People will constantly be knocking on your door, phoning, etc. wanting the RA to mediate disputes and deal with noise complaints. Meanwhile, you'll be getting woken up at all hours and not getting paid a thing!

If it's apartment-style dorms, it's not a huge issue. Make sure the RA has the room closest to the front door. If it's a shared dorm room, definitely ask to be switched. Say you have sleep problems and need to be able to sleep uninterrupted (or get paid for the inconvenience).

A resident advisor (RA) is the student with authority on the floor of the dorm where you will be living. They usually are an upper classman that have proven themselves to be responsible, get good grades etc. They serve as a connection between the students living on your floor and the staff and faculty of the college. If you are a party type you probably won't like having an RA as a roommate. Most of the RAs I had were very nice and helpful but there were a few who were always on a power trip and acted liked they owned the floor. Good luck!!

a resident advisor, more commonly referred to as an RA, is someone who's kind of like the hall/floor supervisor. they're the go-to person if someone on the floor is having trouble or needs something. basically, they're a liason between the hall staff (hall coordinator), and the residents.

it could be a good thing... as you might be more likely to get away with small infractions AND you'll know when room inspections are coming up before anyone else does. could be a bad thing if they're uptight and pretty strict about the rules... just expect to have people knocking on your door at random hours of the day and night.. wanting random things.

RAs yes....that's the student in charge of the hall. They get paid for it, although not much. Typically it's an upperclassman, level-headed and more mature than most, often putting themselves through school which is why they are so desperate that they are an RA. They have thankless job....have to enforce rules on drunken naive freshman away from home for first time, while trying to be cool playing surrogate mommy and daddy. God bless them.

It is a person who lives in the dorm and helps monitor students in the dorm. The RA also mediates disputes between roommates, neighbors, etc.

it could be a good or a bad thing-

an RA (resident advisor) is the person that oversees your dorm and makes sure no one is drinking, breaking stuff and pooping in random places. If you like to drink and crap in random places, then your screwed. your RA is gonna be on you like a fat chick at a chinese buffet.

However, if your RA is cool and not too strict, he/she wont bust you for being a silly freshman if you make good friends with him/her.

My RA was a complete cock bag with a fat girlfriend and went to great extents to bust my friends and i.

It's basically a babysitter for people who are living away from home for the first time. They are upperclassmen who get free housing in exchange for watching out for the students in the dorm.
