Currently Willy Mays, but Andruw Jones will be #1 by the end of his outstanding career.

The greatest defensive player at his position during the modern era of baseball 1946-2006 has been Richie Ashburn. 500 total chances in a season for an outfielder is a very-very rare feat. Ashburn did it 7 times...

The best season by an infielder(2B-SS-3B) was by Jerry Priddy, he is the only infielder to have over 1,000 total chances in one season.

If defense is about catching the ball and making plays, which I believe it is, then these are the two best defensive players of the modern era of baseball...

The hardest defensive position is argueably 3rd base. The best third basemen of all time are Brooks Robinson and Craig Nettles.

I think it's a toss up between those two players.

Ozzie is the obvious answer.

I like the person who said Honus Wagner (he used to scoop up pebbles whn he fielded a groundball)

But I've got to go with Tris Speaker, played the shallowest CF in MLB history and it was damn near impossible to hit a ball over his head, he was incredibly quick.

Ozzie Smith. He made so many catches in the horizontal position. He would warm up before the game fielding grounders and accurately throw to first base without looking at first base.
