What does a stay of execution mean?

I live in the UK and we don't have anything like that here.

A stay of execution is when the time and or date of and execution is delayed. It is generally done when there is a question of guilt or for humanitarian reasons.

someone for some good reason has stop the execution from happening the person wont die right away!
