Your mind can be the only place. Think about it, if you are in a crowded room or anywhere there are all kinds of people, your mind can take you anywhere at anytime. Therefore, if one would so choose you can be in the loneliest place that is possible.

For the most part, I'd say that the loneliest place is often in my own head. The location in the physical doesn't matter, but everyone can be lonely in their own minds and hearts. It's good though that it isn't all the time. :)

Once upon a time....
I was engaged to this guy, and I discovered that he'd been dishonest about some things. My parents REALLY did not like him and had offered to get me a plane ticket to another state, where one of my dad's brothers lived....
Anyway, once I got to Uncle D-'s house, I quickly discovered that I was very alone. Uncle D and Aunt C have 4 kids, I was 20-something at the time, and their oldest was 10!.... and my aunt and uncle had their own things going, so that left me completely alone. I was in a strange town, with friends totalling ZERO!!
...At least that first week. I took things into my own hands, and solved the problem...

I guess it differs from person to person. Some may feel that when they are all alone with no one besides them, they will feel lonely. Some feels that even when there are lots of people or very crowded, they don't belong, then they may feel lonely.
Actually it all goes down to whether how a person feels in a situation.

To be by yourself, alone. locked away from the outside world. To have all of your friends forget you, as though you never existed. To be forgotten forever.
