There are four possibilities.

1) you need software drivers
2) your flash drive is not the same USB version as on your computer.
3) bad flash drive
4) you had recent work on your computer and the drive letters got rearranged. If the drive letter that the flash drive used to use, is now being used by another drive, it won't recognize it the flash drive when you connect it. What happens is it tries to assign the same drive letter. If you have other USB devices connected, then disconnect them and try again, see if that helps.

It must need the drivers. Either your system is older and needs to have the drivers installed on the computer to get the flash drive to work, or it's newer but the drivers got deleted.
Or....your USB drive is shot and should try another drive to put the flash drive into.

what you could do, is put the drive in, and
click the start button
click on control panel
click on add hardware and see if it can detect it.

it means that your usb port does not interpret that it it a flash drive making it unknown. all u need to do is get some software wether u buy it or get it off the internet. the software will fix the promblem and were all happy.

It means the USB port in your computer is ruined.

Try re-inserting it or putting it in another USB port.
