In the proper environment, such as the female reproductive tract beyond the cervix, sperm have a life-span of up to five days. In other environments, such as the vagina, sperm live only a few hours and even less than that outside the human body, exposed to the open air. The egg, on the other hand, has a life-span of only about twenty-four hours from the time it bursts from the ovary. So, fertilization can occur anytime live sperm meet up with a live egg, which can happen even if the sperm are deposited up to five days in advance of ovulation.

i think there is no definite answer to your question... getting pregnant is not only something biological but also something psychological as well. many couples that want to have a baby have unprotected sex for many years without having a baby, whereas many couples that do not want to have a baby and have unprotected sex have a baby very soon. and i'm not talking about being fertile or not, i'm talking about 'healthy' couples.

so, if you don't want to have a baby and you have a relationship, figure out the kind of contraceptive together with your partner, you may use the pill or he might use the condom or whatever. i suggest that you figure it out with him, because birth prevention should be a topic for both partners, not only one of them. if you don't have a relationship, do yourself a favour and use condoms, they also prevent from AIDS and other diseases.

in case you do want to have a baby, don't be attached to it, relax, have fun and enjoy sex together with your partner, enjoy the time together with him and don't have sex just because you want to have a baby - as i said before: getting pregnant is also something psychological, believe me...

also, be aware of the fact that many couples think that it's the amount of sperms that is decisive for a pregnancy, so they wait 3-4 days or even longer because they suppose that then there may be a lot of sperms in the ejaculation. it's not the quantity of sperms though that makes a difference, it's the quality, because sperms only survive up to 3 days in the scrotum and then the ejaculation consists of too little sperms that are fertile. so forget about that and have fun! having a baby is a lifetime experience from the time you decide having it, to the time you give birth to it.

and: be aware that sperms don't only survive for hours, as someone told you before i answered your question, but for days!!!

i hope i could help you out!

tc and good luck, f.

First, it depends if any sperm actually was released inside you while having sex. You can have unprotected sex (although highly *not* recommended) as long as the male releases externally (well away from your vagina).

IF the male did release inside you there's a pill you can take dubbed "the morning after" (i think that's what's called) that you can go to your local parenthood planning center and take so that you won't get pregnant. From what I recall reading years ago this forces the female to have a period (the egg and vaginal lining diminishes) therefore preventing any fertilization.

Hope that helps.

Sperm can live 24 to 48 hours inside the vaginal walls, so that is the time span you can get pregnant. How soon can you tell you are pregnant? The home pregnancy tests state some can tell up to 4 days BEFORE your missed period. What I would do is on the day or the day before your period is supposed to start, take a pregnancy test. If you are, it will show up.

Good luck with everything!

You can get pregnant right away during the unprotected sex. don't have unprotected sex it's too risky. Take a pregnancy test if you're worried. If you are, you need to tell someone you trust, preferably an adult female.
