I'm not an American, but if I'd be (which I hope sometime in the future) I would be a Republican.
- I believe in free economy and the power of people's creativity and think that the government does a very lousy job trying to conrol it.
- I believe that matrimony is the base of society and that it should be between a man and a woman.
- I strongly believe that abortion is the most sickening crime men can commit against the most defenseless human being, a baby! I'm a doctor and "that" is not a mass of cells, it's a human being you are killing.
- I was once a liberal and learned that although liberal systems want to erradicate poverty, they end up keeping the poor in poverty (and the worst, they thrive from them!).
Most Democrats believe in government control of the economy, gay marriage and support abortion ("pro-choice" is a politically correct word). Those are probably the main reasons why I would be a Republican instead of a Democrat, although I will definitely look at the candidate first.

Democratic ..although the lines have been slurred somewhat, when I was growing up the Republican Party was the one known for:
-- Nixon, Vietnam and later Watergate
-- Favoring big business and the rich
-- Slow to support the Ciuvil Rights Movement
While not in love with the Dems, I have never voted for a Republican for President, even though I was less than enamored of either Gore or Kerry's campaigns. Still, being a liberal, to me, means open-mindedness, sticking up for those who are less powerful in society, and when I don't know the best solution(s), trying to at least err on the side of compassion.

I am a democrat but I vote based on the candidate. Especially in the local arena there can be good candidate in both parties.
