Well, back in the day, when people used to lynch (hang) black people, they would have some thing called a "pick-a-ni*ger". It wa disgusting really, they would eat with their kids as if it was some great event and eat and enjoy themselves while watching those people die. They shortened "pick-a-****er" to "picnic"... now, it only deals with the lunch part, but not the lynching part. But some find it disrespectful considering where it came from and what it really means...

Picnic was borrowed from French piquenique, a word which seems to have originated around the end of the 17th century. It is not clear where it came from, but one theory is that it was based on the verb piquer `pick, peck' (source of English pick), with the rhyming nique perhaps added in half reminiscence of the obsolete nique `trifle.' Originally the word denoted a sort of party to which everyone brought along some food; the notion of an `outdoor meal' did not emerge until the 19th century.

Because college is a breeding ground for ignorance. If it's a picnic, call it a freakin picnic.
Don't forget, when you're cleaning up later, don't use 'Mr. Clean', that's sexist. Don't use '**** and Span', that's racial (can't even say that here!). Don't use 'All' because it might hurt the feelings of people that can only afford some.
Don't serve hot dogs or hamburgers, they support animal cruelty. Don't serve beer, that supports alcoholism.
Don't set up on the grass, you might injure an endangered bug. Don't set up on cement, you are supporting the destruction of habitat. Don't put out flyers, that destroys forests.
In fact, you're safest if you just call the whole thing off.

Are you sure they weren't joking? I've never heard of it being racist.
Okay, I looked it up online and its from a hoax! From Wikipedia:
"In the late 1990s an e-mail hoax spread around the internet claiming that the word "picnic" was actually derived from racist term for a lynching. This claim had no basis in fact."
The page about it on snopes.com is linked below!

because two things that are often eaten at picnics are watermelon and fried chicken. The lefties than extrapolated
from this fact that the word picnic must be included in the
list of words that are considered racist because watermelon
and fried chicken are two of blacks favorite foods.
