you can usually download pdf files of user manuals for scanners and the like from the support sections of the makers websites.

just download it to My documents under a name that you'll recognize. compose and email, and find the "attach file" or a paper clip icon usually and browse your hard drive for the file, which will be located where you saved it (which is why selecting my documents is a good idea).

Make sure your scanner is plugged into power and into the computer. Try installing software that comes with it, and then using the software to initiate a scan. If you don't have software for the scanner, you can let Windows try to find a driver (plug and pray). Then use TWAIN to start a scan: you can do it using Windows' built in facilities or those of a paint program. Compress the pictures before you send them; they're huge. Attach them by clicking the attach button in your e-mail.
