I think it's a bit of an outdated term. Wikipedia has a thorough definition of hippie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippie In the current era, a number of different cultural movements embrace the same ideals that hippies did in the 60's and 70's. There is alot of overlapping in the philosophies of different groups - whether they realize it or not. (by the way, smoking pot doesn't necessarily make you dumb and jobless. Boston, believe it or not, has the highest marijuana usage in the U.S. It also happens to have one of the highest education and lowest unemployment rates.)

A hippie was a person allegedly very laid back, lived in a commune, wore tie dye, grew vegetables, worked as a group in their commune. Some begged on the street. Most smoked pot. I'm speaking in the past tense because if you find a hippie today, it would have to be a leftover one.

The Hippie culture is, as I am, a culture of peaceful, questioning , and research for the questioning of the political stance of the United States Government and how it affects the life of the ethnic minorities and their interaction with the general population! We belive that cooperation between all segements of society is the place to which all peace may be obtained.

I think of a hippie as someone who believes in the spirit of the 60's. A freedom junkie. Some you who believe in the idea of person rights, non conformity, and individuality. A music loving, protesting, dope smoking, free thinker who is not afraid of showing it or telling it to the man. Someone who is against letting the man, hold them down from doing what they love.

That's my experience with one hippie, my second ex hubby, good ole Jim!....................:)............ he fell out of a tree while he was stoned, and couldn't even wipe his own butt, for bout 6 months, he was a good hippie!

My sister. Someone who lives out in the middle of the woods, grows their own vegetables and herbs, has a few chickens to supply eggs, lives in a one-room house, possibly as part of a group of houses, does not have electricity, and is a vegetarian.
