What makes the UN think they can succeed where Israel has failed in stopping Hezbollah shelling Israel? Is Israel seeking help now after they started something 1000 times bigger than it ever should have been? Is Israel running scared?

to coragryph It seems to me that Israel is trying to have their cake and eat it too. They anger Hezbollah from their actions in destroying Lebanese towns and now they want the UN forces to rout out the enemy. Why should our forces be fighting their battles?

It's not something that Israel can't do. It's something that Israel doesn't want to do.

Israel would far prefer not to be involved in another land-war. They asked Lebanon for years to stop Hezbollah, and asked again for weeks after the latest crises started. Only when Lebanon refused to step up and stop Hezbollah was Israel forced to take matters into their own hands.

If the UN puts troops on the ground that will hunt down Hezbollah and disarm them, Israel will be thrilled. It's not that Israel is scared. It's that any country in their sane mind (excluding the US obviously) doesn't' voluntarily get into a land-war against guerrilla terrorists. So, Israel would far prefer a multi-national force to do the job so they can go home.

But if the UN won't stop up, then Israel will stay and finish the job. As necessary.

What the UN can do that any individual country cannot do is put its troops in the way, and make the combatants think twice about firing on them. Although there have certainly been instances of combatants firing on UN peacekeeping forces, most combatants think twice about doing that, because it means you are making the whole world your enemy. So the UN presence can sometimes slow things down and lead to a ceasefire.

Maybe, just maybe, the world will now start looking at and listening to both sides of the conflict. Or maybe, just maybe, they are starting to see Israel for what it is. (A rogue nation)
How many people have, like me, gone from supporting Israel's right to exist a few weeks ago, to wishing this heartless nation would just disappear off the face of the earth? We are many.
