Assuming a tensile strength of about 2,000,000 psi 10 pounds could be supported by (10/2000000)=.000005 in^2
A=pi*r^2
r=sqrt(A/pi)=.00126in
d=2*r=.0025"

Now remember tension is at the top of the branch acting parallel to the grain and created by the moment of the weight of the possum at a arm the lenth it is away from the tree.
So the final answer is multiplied by this distance.

ex. if the possom was 5 feet out on the brance it would need to be at a minimum of 36*.0025 =.15 inches.

This seems extremely small better check on the number I used for tensile strength.

And the opossum and the possum are two different animals.

not enough info...you need the average tensile strength of the limbs in general...like say a limb 3 inches around will support a 20 pound possum...then a limb 1 1/2 inches will support a ten pound possum...understand?

answer42's answer is incorrect...

10 times the diameter of a limb that supports a 1 pound opossum.
Yes, its opossum, not possum.

You'd think that someone with giraffe in their name would know how to spell opossum...
