No. The St. Louis Cardinals use to be the St. Louis Browns. In 1899, the St. Louis Browns changed their name to the St. Louis Cardinals. The name was inspired by switching their uniform colors from brown to red. There was already a "Reds" team at Cincinatti, so the St. Louis team became "Cardinals" inspired by the red coloring of the bird. Also, the state bird of Missouri is not the cardinal, it's the bluebird.

Which is NOT the state bird of MO, that's the Eastern Bluebird.

The Cardinal IS, however, the state bird of 7 other states, IL, IN, KY, NC, OH, VA and WV.

One the other hand, the Baltimore Oriole is the state bird of Maryland.

Yep. St. Louis Capet, patron saint of King Louis xii. The city was fonded in Catholic root. It was only fitting for a city named for a saint to name their baseball team for the higherarchy of the catholic church
