It depends on the species of the fish. On live bearers, the male will have a long skinny fin on the bottom of him by his anus. The female fin is broad. The male's fin is skinny because he has to put it inside the female to get her pregnant. She doesn't lay eggs, her babies are formed inside of her, and are born ready to swim.

On egg layers most of the males are more brightly colored because they have to impress the females.
When I had Cory cats breed in my tank, I looked straight down on the fish. The females where wider, bigger and fatter looking then the males.
Goldfish females get rounder in the spring before they spawn, while the males get white bumps on their gills.
On a lot of egg layers, it is almost impossible to tell the sexes apart if the female has the same color and size as the male, and isn't heavy with eggs.
What kind of fish do you want to know about?

It depends on the species of fish.

With some species the differences between male and female are very distinct, while in other species it's practically impossible to distinguish between the two genders.

The one laying the eggs is female ;-)

Depends on the species. Male gulpys are more colorful. Male swordtails have a "sword" on their tail, while females do not.

Ask the person at the pet store.
