The first part of teaching is to gain the respect and desire to please from the student. Unless You find a way to stir up interest time spent will be wasted. The good thing is at least you will get paid. Pressure does not get the objective done. Coercion does. A rewards program might really help. If he can learn the content so so much of the plan a special treat will be given. Matching the reward with the effort will get results. Remember just pushing may get you excited but the outcome will not change. Find his weak spot and explore it. Perhaps tickets to a great concert or some other treat will motivate him. Do not promise more than you can deliver. The parents may limit his activities but that will only build more resistance.

make it interesting. Have pretend trips to Paris to a toy store and see what he wants to buy but he has to do it in French. Pretend to go to the zoo and see if he can remember animal names in french. Make it fun and interesting.
See if he gets into a hotel if can ask for a meal. Do not start with verbs and plus que parfait etc...that is so boring in French. Just do conversations, the rest will follow.
