the black spot looks like it is in the body, not outside of it. right by the butt....the fish is kinda transparent where i can see the spot

Yes, it means they are pregant. It's called a "gravid" spot and it's where the babies are developing.

You tell male and female platies apart by looking at the tails. Males will have a bigger, prettier tail. The spot you are talking about may just be an irregularity in coloring. Like some cats have spots and some don't.
You will know when she is pregnant. She will get fat. Hugely fat.
Get a book on raising the babies if you want to have babies. If not, just leave her alone. She and the other fish in the tank will eat the babies when she has them.
Good Luck,

platty fish even the same type usually vary some..she will get real fat and round i would set up a small tank like a 10 gal. and if you do not have one look on ebay or garage sells ect they are usually cheep... and set it up to put her in untill she gives birth then remove her and put her back in the original tank so she wont eat her babies ..platties WILL eat their babies all the time!! yuck...well if that is not possible get lots of breeder plants and grass and other decore for them to hide in... they have better chances then....when you move fish ..bag them and float the bag untill the water temps match (20mins or so)not to shock them... once the babies are to big to fit in the adult platties so not to be eaten..good luck it is alot of fun ...i have seen them actually give birth it was sooo cool!!! breed many live bearer fish..you are correct you look at anal fin and if it looks more like a "stick" it is a male if it looks like a "open fan" it is a female.is she big& round and fat ??if yes, then it is probably babies if not probably just markings,or food.
