a shingle is cut into 3 pieces, cut where the slots are on the shingle and you have 3 caps. to install simply nail each cap on the uncolored (black) end, 2 nails, 1 on each side of your roof. Cover with next cap and so on.

Most caps are just shingles that are divided in to three parts, Nail from the front placing the tab forward and one nail in the tab, then nail the tarred portion , place next tab to cover like reg shingles , repeat till you get to the end , At the end you will have a tarred end showing nail it down and then cut the tarred end off and nail shingle use a four nail pattern,

Get a book on roofing at the lumbetr store, they have pictures that you can look at, as well as explaining the steps you need to take.
