I thought I wore a 38D and I realized I need a new one because it was too big. Took my measurements (34 around the ribs and 38 around the chest). According to a few bra size calculators, the size should be something like 40A. What?
Anyone know anything about the sizing and what type of store would be good to get fitted? ie, a department store, Victoria's, etc...

Hi, I work at Victoria's secret. It depends how tight you mesure yourself. Measure yourself right underneath your chest (as if you wearing a bra) and then add five inches. it should give you your band size. Then measure your breasts (do it a little bit loose). Then culculate the inch difference from your band size. Every inch is a cup size. Lets say, zero difference is AA, one inch is A, Two inch is B, etc...

Chest size and cup size, Victoria's is one of the few that actually take the time to measure you and help get you into the most comfortable one. Size 40a from a 38d somethings wrong!

well this is how you do it
1 measure around your chest
just under ur breasts
2. add 5 inches if it is and odd number
4 if its even thats ur bra measurement
3. to find out what cup you need you need to measure the fullest part of your breast
if the two #'s r the same u r an AA-cup
if they differ by 1 inch u need a A-cup
if they differ by 2 inches u need a B-cup
if thediffer by 3 inches u need a C-cup
if theydiffer by 4 inches u r a D-cup
Example shara's was 28
addind 4 inches 32inches this isher bra measurement
shara's second measurement was 34 inches
the #'s differ by 2 inches(the numbers 32 &34)
so she needs a B-cup
so shara's bra a size is 32B

LOTS of great advice here! I just learned all these details late in life, I wish I knew this as a young woman! My shoulders and boobs are so much happier! 38-double F [naturally] that is hell on a 5' 2" body. I need to wear one- 24/7- only the shower and sex, do the girls get to be free!

A better department store- Marshal Fields, Macy's and others have a professional person who sizes woman.

They measure your body width and cup sizes. It is very common for each breast to be a different sizes, you size for the larger on and add something to the other. It should feel "snug" on the tightest notch, because as you wear it the fabric will spread, when its loose on the middle notch its time to toss it out.

Never put them in the washer, use a oil remover dish soap and hand wash and hand dry on a hanger. The dryer is just evil for that fabric. I wash all mine on Saturday and go free or tank top on Sunday.

Best advise, purchase a bra to match your body color for day to day wear, with excellent support and save the fancy "throw away" sexy ones for the occasional use. A good bra will cost $40-$80. Any more your getting fancy fabric or a name brand.

When you go to try them on, go early and shower/no underarm chemicals and wear a dark easy cover shirt in case you need to run for another size. You will be naked to be sized, so don't freak. It will take 10-20 one to try them on to get it right. Never settle for alright. Its your body, get it right.

Happy hunting.

Most good Department stores have a Bra Specialist to help you with buying the right bra for you. Also Victoria's Secret can help you as well!

go to Victoria Secret. My best friend got measured there and found out that she was a 32D and that bra size doesnt even exist cause its so small around the bust but her cup size was so big so then she got fitted and found the perfect bra! it was awesome for her! Try it cause they have these new bras called Body and they feel awesome! I wore one.

I got fitted at Voctoria's and found out I was actually a size smaller.

When you put on the bra you should bend over and let your breast fall into the cups. The straighten up and the straps should be high up on your back with little slack in it.

the number is the ribcage measurement and that is pretty easy to measure.

The best way to figure out bra size is to try on the various cups and see which fit the best, from A (the smallest) to D (bigger) and the larger sizes (E and up) which usually have to be special ordered, they aren't generally carried on the shelves.
