American boys (and men) are taught very early on that it is
important to be "cool". This has all kinds of really unfortunate
implications (for instance, is it "cool" to be smart?).
Showing that you like someone is dropping your guard and is
not cool. Of course, having the prettiest girl in the class
hanging off your arm is cool. Caring that you have the
prettiest girl in the class hanging off your arm is not cool.
One of the sure signs of people maturing (either gender)
is when they stop thinking about what other people think
is cool and actually go after what they want.
