how can i stop the previously searched items in search engines being displayed when you start typing,(not a mac computer)

Its due to auto complete feature of IE. you need to disable auto complete

To disable all AutoComplete settings:

1. From Internet Explorer, choose "Tools" then "Internet Options".
2. From the "Internet Options" multi-tabbed dialog box that appears, select the "Content" tab.
3. Click the "AutoComplete" button.
4. Uncheck everything.
5. Click the "Clear Forms" button.
6. Click the "Clear Passwords" button.
7. Press "OK" to close the dialog boxes.

Many people will tell you to clear your history and cache. That is all well and good, but it sounds as if you had a very specific request: to prevent previous searches from autocompleting in the search field.

If this is the case then you can click "Tools" in the menu bar of internet explorer. Then at the bottom of that menu click "Internet Options".

Select the tab that says "Content" and then click on the button that says "Autocomplete".

Uncheck all three of those little boxes to disable autocomplete for good.

If you are worried about people seeing the websites that you have surfed, all you have to do is go back to the Internet Options menu. Under the General tab, click "delete cookies", then click "delete files" ensuring that the checkbox for "delete all offline content" is checked. Then click the button that says "clear history". This is the most thorough way to erase your tracks =)

Do this:

Click on Tools> Internet Options> Advanced>

On the heading titled Browsing scroll down until you find the selection "Use inline AutoComplete"

Remove the green check mark beside that selection then click Apply > OK

That should stop it.
