There is only one sensible answer - Invest the lot and live off the appreciable interest that would be generated. You can get advice on investments from your Bank - most banks offer high interest short term investments (30 days) and can manage your account to continue to search for the best deals available. Don't squander it - you won't get it again. Just consider - £4m at a measly 1% interest will gross you £40000 per year. You should be able to get at least 5% on wise investment - and £200k is not a bad income!

Phd or maths degree - with all that money I could take a lifetime, which is probably what I'd need. Buy a decent home. Give up job. Choose to do whatever charity work I wanted. Help homeless. Buy hot air balloon and fly in it. Maybe I could convince Tom Cruise that it wasn't his money I was after, having a fortune of my own.

I have 3 business ideas which I am following up myself and which could all be done simultaneously with that kind of money.
But I'll just do them one after the other...
Isn't it strange, some people have some ideas and some have some money, and rarely do these two things coincide... ;-)

Invest it in the stock market. You can expect an income of £120,000 pa. for life, and then your children and their children. A wonderful future.
But if you marry, for heavens' sake move it abroad beforehand. A divorced wife will get half. It is beyond joke.

Start an "angel" fund. (look around for bright kids with great ideas for a business, but no funds, then become partners with them. You provide the money, they do all the work, and you each own half the business)

Open a Children's home, or Old Folks Home. Or donate part of the money for new medical research. Or donate some of the money to tragedy-stricked countries.

the first thing i would do is make enquiries about how to get me my family and the money out of this country and away from greedy Gordon and generous tony. someplace like Australia or even France. people in these countries are listened to by their governments and not beaten up and robbed like they are in England.
