I just had a tree cut down and a baby bird fell out. I've wrapped it to keep it warm but can't find any worms or such to give it.

Can anyone tell me how to feed and water this precious bird?

The best thing to do if you find a baby bird is to leave it alone...Mom or Dad may be watching from a nearby perch. If the bird appears as though it has fallen from a nest, try to locate the nest and carefully return the baby bird.

If the bird has feathers, it may be a fledged bird and a parent bird is probably close by. As long as the bird is in no danger from cats or other predators, it is best to watch the bird from a distance to see if a parent returns. Watch the activity of the baby bird for an hour or so before determining that the bird needs human help.

Birds do not have a true sense of smell, so the myth that birds will reject a baby bird if touched by a human is not true. A baby bird that has been touched by a human, however, is easier for a predator (cat, raccoon, etc.) to find.

What if no nest is found or a bird is "rescued"?

~ Call a rehabilitator to care for the bird.
~ Provide warmth to the baby bird. A hot water bottle or heating pad on a low setting or even hot water in a glass bottle will do.
~ Taking care of injured birds and wildlife should be left to people who know how to do it best.
~ ♥ Contact the Wild Birds Unlimited nearest you for wildlife rehabilitators in your area.

Keeping a wild baby bird alive is difficult. The mortality rate is high. And you can't simply feed it a couple of times a day. It has to be fed hourly. If it's feathered and can hop, put it back outside where the parents can find it. If not, look in the yellow pages to see if there's an animal/wildlife rescue that can take it.

Last resort, Petco and other pet specialty stores sell baby bird formula meant for doves, parrots, lovebirds and the like. This is fine if your bird is a seed-eater, not so good if it's a insectivore.

My parents have had that happen a couple of times, and they would feed the birds baby food (chicken or turkey) with an eye/medicine dropper or vienna sausage (cut into tiny pieces)with a straw cut into in half and then in half again so that u can feed the bird by sticking the food far enough into its throat (like the mother does) so it can swallow it. Also give some water with another eye dropper...but less water than food.

It still may still die, but it may not.

If it does grow up, let it go free after you do a couple of test runs...er flys...and see that it can fly away...it's really neato if that all ends up working out.

If you touched it with your hands than it is screwed but you didnt say that, just know that birds can smell humans on other birds and kill them if touched.
They eat over 200 worms in 24 hrs as really little babies, so good luck with that.
I have been there and done that the bird died the morning after, and we feed it plenty, but not anough i guess?

you probably cannot save the baby bird, and, in fact, nothing can probably be done, because as soon as the others of it's kind smell your scent on it, they will destroy it.

And, now, if you want to try to domesticate it, you'll have to cage it, forever, and it must be taken to the vet. for your safety and protection from the many bird diseases, including salmonella, that kills so many people each year!

Each time you handle it, you must decontaminate yourself, your clothing, and the area where you took the bird. NEVER in the House, especially, in the Kitchen, where you prepare food!

Its not that easy Sweetie. Mother birds actually chew the food first. Try checking with a pet store for suggestions.
