This sounds like the opening line of a murder mystery.
If you have household products suitable for poisoning a rat you probably shouldn't. Just get some D Con or other commercial rat killer from your hardware store. Even grocery stores carry them. They're easy to use and come containerized for safety.
Or I could lend you my dog. She just killed big old rat.

A tray of cut vegetables (you can buy celery and carrots pre-cut). I'd add cucumber spears, and green and yellow pepper strips. You have to cut them yourself but they are still pretty quick. You can buy pre-made Ranch dressing or get the packet and make it yourself. Quick, easy and generally very popular. Another easy thing people usually really like is a tray of pepperoni slices and cut cheese, with crackers. For something a little different, get a can of fat-free re-fried beans. Spread them on a plate, cover with loads of Colby-Jack cheese and heat until the beans are hot and the cheese is melted. Serve with Olive Oil And Rosemary flavored Triscuits, or Garlic flavored Triscuits. Have fun and best of luck.

aww, i would not use poison because the mouse is going to die somewhere in the house and then decay! It is going to stink just so bad for at least 2 months, and if it is going to be a rat, it will stink worse and longer. If i were you i would use glue traps for mice, not sure about rats.

I work in an office building and we use glue pads. They are available at your local home center. They also a peanut butter aroma to them. Place a few around the area were you see them or their droppings. Make sure they are against a wall or in a corner, that is their favorite path of travel.

P. S. Try not to touch then with ANYTHING THEY STICK
REALLY WELL.

Good Luck

eliminate any food source. try and find out where they are coming in so u can block the hole. check under your sink for holes. they have hav- a-hart traps which catch them so u can take them down the street to the woods somewhere instead of killing them. if u just kill them which is mean others will still keep coming back. plus he could die in the wall. u have to find their entrance and block it. if its an odd shape steel wool will work or if its small plain old glue. sometimes strong scents such as cayenne pepper, moth balls, or peppermint extract will work because they hate the smell. maybe u have one of those around the house? i don't advocate killing anything.

GLUE TRAPS WORK THE BEST AND ARE TROUBLE FREE. NEXT CHOICE WOULD BE THE SPRING TRAPS WHICH YOU PUT IN BAIT AND SET(THEY SOMETIMES MISS CATCHING AND THEN THE MOUSE WON'T GO NEAR IT AGAIN). THE DECON/WARFRIN POISON DOES CAUSE IT TO BLEED TO DEATH, USUALLY INSIDE A HOLE OR WALL AND IT DOES STINK FOR A WHILE. THE BIGGER THE RODENT THE LONGER THE SMELL.

"around the house ingredients?'...not sure, but I heard that mice can't burp....,so give them some cola or rootbeer...I was told their stomach's explode!
De-con works good,we always used it growing up in the country,I believe the poison dehydrates them,so the stink is minimal...good luck.

just get an old school mousetrap from walmart, it will be like one dollar, and you wont stink up your house.....

the down sides are that that trigger is really sensitive, and it hurts when it hits your fingers......

and....

you have to look at that nasty mouse when you throw out the trap
