this is a question to which i want to know the answer also, or what is time. the universe is seen to be understandable only with the intermingling of space and time.

Time is neither a human construct nor an invention of man. My personal theory is that it was created along with matter and energy. I'm not sure about space. Perhaps it transcends creation. It is often considered the fourth dimension, after the 3 spatial demensions we know so well. General and Special Relativity offer ways of computing physical laws in terms of these 4 dimensions. Some theories allow for time to move in the reverse as well as the forward direction. I'm not ready to place bets there yet. The simplest answer to your question that I can think of is, "All of science".

time is a human construct based on the idea of a linear progression of events. We have assigned values that attempt to divide up the segments of the earth's rotation on its axis and its orbit around the sun. Since we have not done so perfectly, we have to correct for the error with 29 February. If you are interested in a consistent source for the accurate time humans have assigned, go to the US Naval Observatory site and there should be a link for the correct time as well as a phone number if you are concerned with download time

Time was invented in the early part of the 15th century by Jerimiah Westclox because he was tired of everything happening at once. "Stretch it out," he always said. No one knows how his invention works, but he received a patent from Issiah "Big Ben" Boluva just before his untimely death.

Time moves forward in every direction. And directions are curved by gravity. Time is more than a human construct. It is a measurable physical quantity. If it wasn't it wouldn't belong in physics!
Time might take place in steps. It might be discrete. If there is such an element of time it is the basis for all change.

Time is the physical property of the universe that prevents all events from happening simultaneously, just as space is the physical property that prevents all events from happening in the same place.
Just waxing philosophical.

it's called the arrow of time- we don't know how just that we know it works "this" way 1st and then "that" way 2nd-- not "that" way 1st then "this" way 2nd. like the q: why don't we see eggs unbreaking, the probability is so low that it will never happen even if the universe lives to be 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years old. asymmetry is the true key to time.

There is an answer to your question. It has to do with an inherent speed within all mass, "c" that all clocks of all types are able to directly relate to. http://360.yahoo.com/noddarc has a page, you may scroll down to entitled, "What is Time". It is easy to read.
