I used to live in a place where there were lots of skunks. I think they were a little used to being near people. You could get about 4 feet away from them before they reacted to you. My rule of thumb was always move slowly, don't make any threatening or sudden moves, and if he turns around, get away from there. I could get real close lots of times and the skunks barely seemed to care. I'm not sure if a skunk out in the wild would react the same way, but I've found most animals will not do anything unless they feel threatened. I've even had raccoons walk about 2 foot away from me in my back yard.

You don't have to run away. Just make sure you give it plenty of space and walk away. They usually give you a warning before they spray unless you just totally surprise them.
