upon taking it in for an oil change, was told there's an oil leak from the distributor onto a hose underneath; they suggest replacing the distributor (it's the original), and hoses-for quite a sum. how do i know if they're right?

The coil is probably built into the distributor...at it's age, it would be a good idea to replace the distributor. You can't get the coil by itsself. Most likely just the O ring on the distributor. Oil may have contaminated it but that's not really a problem. If you don't have the money, take the distributor to a mechanic and see if they have a seal that will fit the one on it. Be sure it's in time and marked before removing it. Good luck.
