Periods are normally no longer than 5-7 days but some can go longer but 12 days of heavy bleeding sounds like a flag that something may be going on. You should go and see your gynecologist right away. Bad cramps and being light headed can be normal at the beginning of your period but not so far into it and still having such a heavy flow after 12 days is also not normal so please, see your Dr. right away. Such problems left untreated can lead to permanent infertility, I know because I, unfortunately am living proof. So please, seek medical help right away!

the length is ok if you are young. Your period will do odd things until you stablalize which might take a few years.

Read what I sent to another female in period agony:
---------------------------------------------

I sympathize with you... oh boy....

ok....

take Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate 100 mg every 2 to 3 hours till pain subsides. You also want to add dong quai. Zinc 10 mg is also good, but the first two are more important.

Secondly... reduce and elminate your intake of AA causing foods. Eggs, vegetable oils (soy, corn, canola, safflower, sunflower), hydrogenated anything...

AA stand for Arachadonic Acid. It is derived from mainly omega 6 sources and it causes an increase in estrogen.

Have instead if you have extra money, (and this is what you should be getting daily anyway), Flax Oil 3 tablespoons a day. Omega 3 will reduce premenstral distress. Reduce to 2 or 1 tablespoon when discomfort subsides.

Try to get your protein sources from fish and vegetables instead of red meat or poultry. Do get your complex carb not from flour but from whole grain like these:
*buckwheat
*amaranth
*quinoa
*brown rice
*oats -preferably whole

Why do I mention all this? Because most OTC pain meds only address your nervous system's response to pain. It doesn't address why the pain is there. Your period eliminates your body's resources of magnesium, and your muscles need magnesium for its strength and fluidity. When magnesium is depleted, your muscles (especially those around your stomach area) start to contract. Replace it and you'll be fine. Might take a day, but still... its better than the alternative.

Take it all month long to prevent your next cycle from this type of grief. Trust me. I know. I can vouch.

Oh guess what... bananas are high in sugar, the other thing that stimulates estrogen and subsequent period distress. If you are a sugar fanatic, try stevia instead. It comes in drops or powder. Other fruits are ok.

You might want to see your OBGYN, it probably depends if your cycles are irregular all the time, or if this is the first. I too have very bad cycles, some times I swear I'm gonna bleed to death and oh my God the cramps. They will probably want to do a pap, and some other tests. It might be a good idea to do it now rather than wait too long, because 12 days definitely isn't the norm. I sympathize with you. Feel better.

You should get in touch with your doctor right away. Some people can have a prolonged period and not be overly concerned, but in combination with heavy bleeding and lightheadedness it is something to get checked right away. If you are not able to get ahold of your doctor, you might call a medi-clinic in your area and see if they can help you. If that is not an option, you might consider a trip to the emergency room. Sometimes women bleeding like this can lead to anemia severe enough to require transfusion.

I would seriously suggest going to see your doctor. Four days to a week is normal but 12 days of heavy flow is not normal. It could be a sign of an underlying medical condition that requires doctors care.

Twelve days is going a little overboard for the expected time in which a period should last. Continue monitoring your symptoms and the amount of blood, and see a doctor or your gynecologist as soon as possible.

If you can't stand the side effects of menstruation, try supplements that will help relieve them.

If it's been heavy for all of the twelve days, I suggest you see a doctor! While you're waiting, if you have cramps, try taking some tylenol. Also, use a heating pad and lay down and relax for a while. Try to take it easy, and feel better soon!

This isn't normal, especially with the heavy cramping and light-headedness. Could you have been pregnant? You could be aborting or you could have an infection or a variety of things that need to be checked out by a professional. Please check with your doctor. Good luck.

If your periods are always like this, it might be normal for you. If this is a one time thing, you should definitely have it checked out sooner rather than later. See a gyno and explain the situation. S/He can run tests and figure out what's going on.
