LOL don't know. i used to be a cashier. well high school summer job ya know. i didn't care really. had to be there 8 hours regardless. but i know what you mean. i've seen it before. the *sigh* of distress, both hands coming down on both sides of the register after of course they type in the amount tendered. lol that's the moment when their eyes get wide when they realize how much change they have to make!!! see there's the key. it's the making change part. if it's a large amount they have to count back, they panic. sad but true, lots of them don't know how to do it. even when the amount is staring them in the face. you really want to drive them crazy, purchase something for like $11.86 and give them a $50.00 bill right. after she punches in the number, ho-humms, etc..... goes through her changes right, tell him/her "oh wait a sec. i have 6 cents. it will drive him/her NUTS!!!! i however was able to handle it. but i actually took the time out to not only learn my job, but how to do it efficiently.

Produce change for twenty 100 bills a day. Your customers buy on an average 10-20 dollars in items. That is over $800 that robbers know the clerk has on hand. Ever look down the barrel of a gun in the hand of a wired up crack head? BOO! HOO! just carry smaller bills.

Probably because they have very little change to work with at any given time...
My younger sister who works as a cashier says it's because mgmt does not want alot of cash lingering.
Theft and counterfeit money as well..

Because people in customer service related positions are underpaid and have to deal with rude people all day. Anything that results in more work for them upsets them and they don't hesitate to show it.
This is not an excuse, just an explanation.
I believe there is no excuse for bad customer service.

Or it's because they don't have enough change, because they have like other customers.
