I have been with this woman for 20 years now. She uses the same tactics quite often, quitting. Example: We where gonna go to a campsite this weekend but I had mentioned the house was a mess and needed attention. I said it should be cleaned before we go so we don't have to come back to a messy house. She gets pissed and says that fine, we can just stay home and clean the house all weekend, gets pissed and walks away. I am soooo sick of this kind of behavior...what can I do to combat it or change it???...HELP!!!!!

If she has been this way for 20 years, she is not going to change without your help. What you should do is help clean the house, then when it's done, ask her if she wants to go to a campsite. if she declines, go alone. You will have to "call her bluff" a few times, but she will get the point sooner or later.

She may have felt you were criticizing her housekeeping. Were you asking HER to clean, or were you suggesting that you both tidy up before you go. I know how you feel, it sucks to come home to a dirty home. You can have a more enjoyable time knowing when you get home you can just sit back and relax.

Talk to her. Ask her if something is bothering her. Let her know you are there for her, and she may open up to you. Be sincere. Don't be overly critical when she does open up, listen to her. Be supportive. The key is open communication. Let her know it bothers you, when she just walks away. Ask her why she was upset.

Maybe she feels like she is stuck, in a rut. Bring her flowers, make her feel special.

Next time she goes out somewhere - grocery store, work, out with a friend - clean up the house for her. Prepare her a nice meal, or if you can't cook, pick up take out. Run a hot bubble bath for her, light some candles. She may feel worn out, and a little relaxation may be just what she needs. :)

Then why do you mention something like this when everything is in an upheaval when you are getting ready to go away??? If it is some much of a concern for you why wasn't it done 2 days ago. And why are you blaming her??? Maybe she is sick and tired of your behavior, why don't you try and change your behavior instead??? If she was getting things ready, maybe she was very busy. While she was getting things ready what were you doing???

Why didn't you clean it yourself? Did you help clean it, or did you expect her to do it?
If, after 20 years, you can predict her behaviour, why did you have to mention cleaning the house and ruin a perfectly good camping trip? Perhaps that's what pissed her off?
