Find out if you have a dvd player or dvd burner. A dvd burner will play dvds as well so you might have a combo drive. If so you may already have the necessary hardware and software.

you say.. "DVD player". You need a DVD burner and DVD burning software. If you have a burner, check at your local computer supply store for options on the software.
If you only have a DVD player, DVD external burners are available to just plug into a USB port. Again, visit your local computer supply store.

You will need an external DVD-R drive, DVD-R/RW media, and MPEG or DIVX encoded movie files.
Many times when you buy a burner, it will include software to help you create discs.

if you only want to burn the videos use burn data -dvd
but if you want to create a dvd movie you need to convert the video to mpeg-2 format
you can use nero to convert and create the dvd, or use different programs to do so

A DVD-RAM is a rewritable DVD that functions like a removable hard disk. DVD-RAM media can be rewritten 100,000 times before it is no longer usable. See DVD-RAM.
DVD-R and DVD+R are competing write-once formats for movies or data. DVD-RW and DVD+RW are competing, rewritable (re-recordable) formats that unlike DVD-RAM's 100,000 cycles, can only be rewritten 1,000 times. Aimed at the consumer, 1,000 rewrites is considered more than sufficient. See DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

Along with an external drive, you will need software too. Roxio is one of the best softwares out there.
