I have noted quite extensivily that mothers with crying babies in shopping presincts, super-markets and cafes as well as in thier houses take AGES to register that there baby is crying and wants to be fed or have its dyper changed etc.

This I am dying to know why this happens; or is it that so many parents have a heart of stone.

They spend so long talking, shopping or doing what ever they have to do, that they seem to never get around this, when we all should see this as 2nd priority.

I think all these mothers and fathers are as bent as a 9 bob note.

Explain.

OK... I don't know what a 9 bob is or why it's bent...
Of course, I am an American and that statement sounds of a different country.
Here in America... Most mothers feed and diaper their babies before going out of the house, and before going into a store or cafe. Most of our shopping center, stores and cafes have "Baby Changing Stations" where we can change diapers. Breastfed babies are fed discreetly and bottle fed babies usually have bottles in their diaper bag, ready for a feeding. I don't see many crying babies when I am out with my baby, or by myself.

Some babies cry when they are "bored" of their environment. Or they are just tired and wants to nap. Us mothers have to get our "stuff" done, bills to pay, groceries to purchase and clothing and so forth. So... We have to go out and do these things, whether baby likes it or not.

My baby cried whenever I put her in her car seat, and sometimes she kept it up until we got back home. By the time she was 6 months old, she had gotten the idea that I am going to go to town and do what I needed to do, and that she just had to get used to it. Now she love it and not even a whimper!

I honestly just don't hear the crying as much anymore since I had my own baby. Mothers learn to tell the difference between *fussing* and *distress.* Before I had kids, I thought all crying was distress, but now I know that sometimes it's just complaining (fussing). When my baby is hungry, I can tell by the urgency of her crying, but a lot of the time she is just fussing because she fell asleep in the car and I woke her up when I went in the store. After she wakes up all the way, she stops fussing.

If a parent seems to be ignoring a crying child, they may just be waiting to see if the cries increase in urgency or go away as the child acclimates to his or her surroundings.

I hate to use your question to respond to another writer, but I am getting a bit tired of Brenda B bashing formula feeders. I have never withheld food, nor has any other formula feeding mother I know because it is a hassle!!!! The instant my child wants food, I pull out a bottle and give it to her. She is not only fine with chilled formula, but I also carry around ready to feed small cans to instantly pour into a bottle. As an answer to your question, either they don't care that their babies are crying or they have checked all the diaper/food avenues and are just trying to quickly finish so they can get their child home.

I can only speak as a breastfeeding mother..i nurse my baby instantly, but I can imagine what a hassle it is for formula feeding mothers to do so and probably ignore their babies as long as possible because they don't have the means to warm the milk or because they have to use both hands to feed instead of just holding the baby like us breastfeeding mothers do. Must be such a pain for the bottle feeders..i'm so glad i don't have to deal with all that crap and can tend to my baby right away as a mother should.

Beth that's too bad if you don't like me bashing formula feeders..to me it's a hassle to have to carry so much stuff for a simple outing..i'm glad i breastfeed because I just grab my baby and go. If you're tired of it then don't read my responses because I will bash formula feeders until one of you can tell me breastfeeding is worse than formula

How do you know that they baby wasn't just fed and that their diaper has been changed. I've done both right before I entered the store and my baby might be crying. Babies sometimes just cry for no reason and it's not a matter of the baby hasn't been fed or changed.

Babies cry for reasons other than hunger. If you notice the parent feeding the baby FINALLY, it could be that nothing calmed the baby down, so as a last resort they gave the baby a bottle.

maybe the child's diaper has already been changed. maybe the child has already been fed. maybe it is something else that is bothering him? perhaps he is cold, maybe he's being a spoiled little thing and wants a toy that mommy won't get him? perhaps he is not used to stores or crowds...there are plenty of reasons why babies cry. if you are not a parent, then maybe you wouldn't find any other reason why a child might be crying.
