Every society has some kind of informal class system. I suppose it's human nature to exclude those whom one does not fancy.
It's a slap in the face, but people are never really born equal. Too much has happened in a person's genealogy for this. We are all born with different baggages to carry, some lighter than others. That's why people care about their legacy so much, to cut their descendants some slack.
But this does not mean I condone formal class systems. I think they're wrong, because they're harsh and inflexible. People should at least be given the chance to climb up (or down) the social ladder. If you come to think of it, we are all equally insignificant in the cosmic context anyway. I think this is why man tries to elevate himself so much, to feel more worthy.
You've got your work cut out for you if you'd like to break "the barriers." Is it mainly the system that distresses you, or your position in it? I mean, if you were the guy at the top of the social ladder, would you still want to break the barriers? If your answer is a sincere "yes," then begin with yourself. Reach out to someone "below" your social status. If it's no, well, get in line. And try not to break any rungs. :)

It serves the same purpose as religion or nationality in a society where there are very few (or only one) distinct religious groups or nationalities. If everyone looks the same and believes the same human nature demands that we create "tribes" or "clans" in some other way. Its an anthropological phenomena that occurs in every nation and society throughout time. Look at cliques in high schools--humans just do it naturally.
Many believe it has something to do with creating a safe social group. You feel the need to surround yourself with those like you--safety in numbers or protection of your genetic disposition if you go for that.
I don't know if its all for the worst or not but just saying that its bad isn't going to change human nature.

every society has a class system, even if people refuse to acknowledge it.
a prime example of this is through eduacation. the government etc decide who has access to 'good knowledge' and 'bad knowledge'. the good knowledge is given to the children of the well-off and results in those children going to university and having positions of power. the bad knowledge goes to the less well of kids, as far as the government r concerned they still need people to empty the bins and pack the bags at tescos. if there is no class system then everyone will want the high status jobs and there will be no one for the more 'menial' jobs.
even the introduction of top-up fees highlight this. making it even more difficult for lower class kids to get to uni
unfortunately there is very little that can be done about this, and, barr a few exceptions, will be the case for the majority of people

In the U.S. in 2000 we had a presidential election that featured the son of a president running against the son of a senator.
It's a heck of a coincidence if there isn't a class system.

You can only break down these barriers my friend: -
When you can make the whole human race: 'EQUAL' in 'ALL THINGS'!!
& I do mean 'ALL THINGS'!!
Which sadly, if the world lasts another 100,000,000 years: will never happen!!
It's a keep up with the 'Jones's' world: and someone, somewhere, will allways look down there nose at someone else!!
