Well, if your outdoor theme involves a Southwestern or desert feeling, you should get an aloe plant. In my experience they are pretty much impossible to kill. In fact, I have had to divide and repot mine once a year since I've had it. Now I have 4, lol. And there have been times in their lives they have been seriously neglected. I originally got it at Wal-Mart for about $3. It's awesome for sunburns, too.
I just keep mine on a southern exposure window sill. They grow faster with fertilizer and consistent, but not excessive, water.

Ferns are great for the outdoor theme but you have to have just the right atmosphere to keep them alive.Philodendrons and spider plants are easy to care for. They droop when they really need to be watered and always perk back up after a good soaking.

A great houseplant/dorm plant is:
ZAMIOCULCASCommon Name: ZeeZee
see a photo here with details: http://snipurl.com/uv5y
It's a beautiful green and you don't have to water this too often. It can tolerate low light levels. Avoid overwatering it. Mine goes for weeks without water & is thriving.
Might be difficult to find one but I did see some at Target once. Might try a florist shop too.

Epiphyllums are awesome, and they grow like crazy with very little care. They are really interesting - they're cactuses, but they live in the rainforest, and they're pretty prolific and tropical looking. Their leaves are very interesting and tropical (no spines), the flowers are huge, and they are very fragrant. I would recommend you look on E-Bay for them, using keyword "epiphyllum" and you'll see some beautiful examples. They root easily from cuttings and hey, low maintenance is great for the dorm!

Philedendron. It grows vines that will get longer and longer, so you can track the progress each semester.
