It is a gift to to be able to put into words that which is unknowbale to the hearts of most. it is a gift to explain in a phrase the anguish of having your soul ripped from you. But to get there... that may be the curse. As Kahlil Gibran writes, "the deeper sorrow has carved into your soul, the more joy it can contain", thus is true for the poet. The deeper that experience has torn you apart, the more nights spent in self-doubt, wondering, crying- the better a poet you will be. Does it set me apart- yes, but I have come to terms with it, and most days can embrace it. It is a gift of the highest honor, but like all great gifts, has a hidden danger. I am actually reminded of ...a poem. It is by Robert Service, "God's Skallywags" I will copy it here for you, it isn't long, and sums it all up very nicely in words I have not yet managed:
God's Skallywags
The God of Scribes looked down and saw
The bitter band of seven,
Who had outraged his holy law
And lost their hope of Heaven:
Came Villon, petty thief and pimp,
And obscene Baudelaire,
And Byron with his letcher limp,
And Poe with starry stare.
And Wilde who lived his hell on earth,
And Burns, the baudy bard,
And Francis Thompson, from his birth
Malevolently starred. . . .
As like a line of livid ghosts
They started to paradise,
The galaxy of Heaven's hosts
Looked down in soft surmise.
Said God: "You bastards of my love,
You are my chosen sons;
Come, I will set you high above
These merely holy ones.
Your sins you've paid in gall and grief,
So to these radiant skies,
Seducer, drunkard, dopester, thief,
Immortally arise.
I am your Father, fond and just,
And all your folly see;
Your beastiality and lust
I also know in me.
You did the task I gave to you . . .
Arise and sit beside
My Son, the best beloved, who
Was also crucified.

i don't call myself a poet,or anything else for that matter, i am an individualist, with my own ideas. a non conformist for sure. i love to write my feels and thoughts down on paper, and this can some times be a blessings and a curse. cause if i start to write and i start reflecting on the bad i become sadden. other times i write about happy times, so a little of both. there have been times i just had to find paper and pen cause the thoughts came flooding in my mind.

It is a gift!!! A poem can move people,
It can change mentalities,
It can give direction and change direction.
A poem is more powerful that a short story,
Many will stop to read a poem,
and will give it more consideration.
Poems are wonderful.
Poems have that ability to say without saying,
and that makes it a powerful tool.
Poems can make people stand
Some recieve ovations lowder than the president.
Being able to write poetry is a gift...
because I have the ability to do all those things...
and that ability...
is
Priceless, powerful, and poetic

after my dad read my first poem he said i had a gift, most of it was just dad being proud. But after i had a few poem's published i knew someone else thinks I'm good too.And as far as being a curse or blessing for me,I'd say hands down a blessing. If not for my writing who knows how i would have handled some things in my life. But by no means does these set me apart from anyone, and shouldn't set anyone apart from anyone else for the simple fact anyone can put pen to paper!
